Asseria is the remains of an important ancient city. It was initially founded in the Iron Age period, and then inhabited by the Liburnians, a tribe of the Illyrians before the Romans moved here. The site has been excavated several times by archaeologists who have found stone sculptures and relief’s including one that features the twins Romulus and Remus. 45 tombstones have been located here.
