Philipp Karl zu Eltz purchased the lordship of Vukovar on the Danube in 1736 and this was said to be an expensive property to own in terms of upkeep and protection against robbers and the Turks. In 1944 the property was seized by people from the communist regime. It was badly damaged during the Homelands war in 1991.
