Rijeka’s City Tower dominates the Korzo shopping area. It was built upon the old medieval sea gateway into the town. The tower is built in several different Baroque styles. It bears an imperial coat of arms and a relief representing Leopold and Charles VI, both Austrian emperors. Charles VI declared Rijeka to be a free port in 1717 which thus increased economic growth within the city. Either side of the city tower are palaces built in the 1700s using the early classist style.
