Close to Solin is a complex known as Gradina near to the river. A church with an odd plan is situated within a medieval fortress. The fortress was built to protect the inhabitants from Klis tribes and again from the Turks. The church was thought to be dedicated to the Virgin Mary and was abandoned before the sixteenth century. The Virgin Mary sanctuary is considered the oldest church in Croatia and trade fairs to celebrate Mary’s Nativity Day have been held here for many years.
