Hvar Arsenal was a huge building that was constructed in the seventeenth century. The ground floor was made arched so that war galleys could be repaired within the building. Upstairs in the arsenal a theatre was introduced in 1612 and it was the first in Europe. This has recently been restored and contains highly decorated walls and boxes that date from the 1800s. Adjacent to the theatre is a modern art gallery that holds a Turkish galley figurehead dating from 1571.
