Hvar Observatory, also know as Napoljun, is run by the geodesic faculty at Zagreb University. The building was built close to a prehistoric settlement. The current fortification was named after the emperor Napoleon and the entire population of the island helped with the constructed but were paid minimal wages. It was renovated in the nineteenth century and was bought by the University of Zagreb in 1972.
