Kaptol castle is one of the best preserved medieval fortresses on the slopes of Papuk Mountain. It was captured by the Turks in 1537 and contained a military garrison until 1687. Prior to that the Pozega Collegiate Chapter was based here and issued legal charters for local nobles. The castle was converted into a manor house in the eighteenth century before becoming uninhabitable after a fire in 1943. The inner castle was built in 1500 in the Gothic-Renaissance style as an irregular hexagon.
