Maksimir Park was first opened to the public in 1794 and it was the first public area in Croatia. The park was founded and named after the Zagreb Archbishop Maximilian Vrhovec. Many of the original monuments, such as the Swiss House and the Echo Pavilion, have been preserved. The Viewpoint, a 3 storey tower, gives views over the park and the Magila is a hillock that contains items of Croatian cultural heritage. The park contains woods, avenues, follies and lakes, perfect for an afternoon’s stroll.
