The Plitvice lakes are a national park of sixteen lakes that are located in the basin of karstic rock and the water frequently changes colour due to the different minerals that are present. The area around the lakes and waterfalls is mainly forested and home to animals and birds such as the brown bear and eagle owl. The lakes have been popular with tourists since the nineteenth century and they are on the UNESCO heritage list.
