A highlight of visiting the town of Varazdin is the town guard who are known as the Purgari. They are volunteers dressed in nineteenth century blue grenadier uniforms and can be found standing outside of the town hall on certain days/times. They also carry out the changing of the guard and take part in city ceremonies. They were first introduced during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa. Many of the buildings in Varazdin are in the Baroque style and the town used to be a popular destination for people heading to Zagreb.
