The Rijeka carnival is a one hundred year old tradition that is a mixture of a bourgeois carnival and zvoncari (Slav mythology – young men dressed in animal skins with cowbells to ward off evil spirits). The carnival has an international aspect to it and there are a wide variety of costumes and face masks worn. Of particular note are the carnival Queen pageant and the hand over of the “town keys”.
