After Lent there is a huge popular carnival held in Samobor. This dates from the nineteenth century and is Croatia’s best known festival. The streets are filled with parading floats and the locals dress up in face masks. There are regular shows, competitions and a mask designing contest. The festival was halted between 1941 and 1966 due to the war. At the end of the carnival a huge fireworks display is held.
