The castle was built in the thirteenth century as part of the Croatia’s north-western fortification and it was restored in the nineteenth century. The museum was established in 1953 by the Republic of Croatia. The castle was once owned by the Draskovics who were an important noble family. Trakoscan has a large collection of weapons including firearms as well as other exhibitions relating to the castle. The park surrounding the castle is styled as a Romanticist pleasure ground with a lake.
