The Triumphal Arch of the Sergi or Golden Gate dates from around 28BC. It was erected in honour of three members of the Sergi family who were important at this time. The triumphal arch was heavily ornamented and was thought to be gilded. The rest of the wall and the gate were destroyed in the nineteenth century to allow the city to expand but luckily the arch remained. Today cultural performances are held in the nearby square.
