Trsat Castle was formerly the property of the Frankopan family, a notable Croatian family from Krk. The medieval castle was positioned upon the remains of a former Roman observation post along an important trade route between Pannonian and the Adriatic coast. The palace was restored in the Classical style by Laval Nugent, an Austrian general.
