The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Stephen was rebuilt in a neo-gothic design in 1880 after a disastrous earthquake. The cathedral has two distinctive spires created by architects Friedrich von Schmidt and Hermann Bolle. Inside are some choir stalls that date from the sixteenth century and surviving mediaeval frescoes from the original cathedral. Around the building are remains of the fortifications that were erected to keep out the Turks.
