The zoological garden in Zagreb was founded in 1925 by Mijo pl. Filipovic on an island in Maksimir forest. The zoo has a number of endangered species including the red panda and the snow leopard, and it is a member of the European endangered species programme. The zoo has seven hectares of land that is mostly wooded and contains 281 different species of animals such as the brown bear and wolf. Regular feeding displays are held with the sea lions.
